Twelve – Cecilia

Maverick sings along to Def Leppard on the radio as he drives us to the next stage of our date. This man is a serious conundrum. How is it that he can be so imperfectly perfect? I told myself that I wouldn’t get swept up in him, wouldn’t fall for his tricks again. Yet here I am, sitting here in awe of him.

Every time he treats me like a person and not just my disability, I want to kiss him—and what a kisser he is. Each kiss we have shared has been so different. Our kiss earlier was so explosive, I wanted nothing more than to fall into him, to see where that kiss could lead to. When we were alerted we were not alone, I was amazed—and slightly embarrassed—that Maverick would kiss me like that in public. Every time our lips touch, I get swept up in him, and even with my conflicted feelings, I cannot bring myself to regret kissing him. It feels too perfect—too right—to regret.

I was hesitant about coming out on this date today. I told myself I forgave him, but I’m not sure if it is something that I can truly let pass. I have been burned so many times by people who I believed were my friend, only to find out that they were trying to make themselves look better by being nice to “that blind girl.”

To someone who doesn’t have my crap-ton of baggage, Maverick ghosting on them for a few weeks might not be that big a deal. But to me, it was another announcement that something is wrong with me, that I’m not good enough for someone like Maverick to pursue and—maybe—eventually love. Three weeks of pain and hurt didn’t go away overnight because he said sorry, and I was hesitant to give him another chance to hurt me again. Yet here I am, giving him his chance.

“We’re here,” Maverick singsongs while exiting the car. He has my door open before I can orientate myself.

“Where is here, exactly?” I ask.

“Ristorante del Treno Pazzo,” he replies, pronouncing each word perfectly. The Crazy Train Restaurant. It is a fancy Italian restaurant that has been open for a few years on the east side of the city. They have amazing reviews and are stupid expensive.

“Wow,” I reply, not having any other words.

He leads me up several steps before reaching around me to hold the front door open for us.

“Good afternoon, how may I help you today?” A chirpy feminine voice announces as we enter the lobby.

“Reservation for Maverick.” I jump in surprise at Maverick’s voice so close to my ear, his breath fanning across my head.

“Of course. This way,” the hostess replies, and Maverick leads me through the restaurant. He pulls out my chair and helps me sit, being chivalrous.

If I am not careful, I am going to fall in love with this man. He is already starting to ruin all men for me.

The hostess hands me a menu, and before I can tell her that I can’t read it, I feel little dots under my fingers.
